CLICK HERE FOR AN UPDATED TUTORIAL BUT PLEASE READ THE INTRO THERE FIRST!!!
I had to update my system so I could play Injustice: Gods Among Us. Now this is a pretty lengthy and detailed tutorial designed for n00bs like me. So if this is your first time to update your XBOX 360 Dashboard/Kernel then I hope this will point you in the right direction.Take comfort in the fact that I succeeded in updating my dashboard on my first try using the following steps.
MY SETUP
+ XBOX 360 4GB Arcade JTAG/RGH (I was led to believe my console was JTAG but I've also seen signs that it could actually be RGH).
+ Dashboard version was 14719 (to be updated to the latest version).
+ Freestyle Dash 3 running from 1 TB external hard drive FAT32-formatted.
DISCLAIMER: If your setup is not exactly or at least very similar to mine, I cannot answer for any errors or damage your console may incur.
REQUIRED XBOX 360 INFORMATION
+ CPU Key (read on to find out how to find your CPU key)
+ Motherboard version (mine is Trinity - read below to find out your motherboard version)
APPS/UTILITIES REQUIRED
+ Simple 360 NAND Flasher - For dumping and updating your dashboard.
+ JRunner - For creating a new dashboard update. Extract all files to any location on your PC.
+ Latest XBOX 360 Kernel supported (16203 at the time of writing) Download latest Dash Pack from the JRunner link above. Extract the files into the JRunner folder you used above and overwrite any files if it asks you to.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
+ FAT32 formatted USB drive
STEP ONE: Finding Your CPU Key
- Turn on your XBOX 360 console not by pushing the power button but by pressing the disc eject button. Your console should, after a few seconds, boot into XELL instead of the XBOX dashboard.
- Wait a bit longer and you should see the screen below.
- Your CPU Key is indicated near the bottom. Take note of this by writing it down or taking a
photo.
STEP TWO: Finding Your Motherboard Version.
- Make sure your XBOX 360 console is powered off.
- Take a look at the back of it and find the sticker as indicated in the photo below. You should see a date in the YYYY/DD/MM format. That is your console's manufacture date. With that info, refer to the link below to find out which motherboard your console is toting.
find your motherboard version here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_hardware#Motherboards
STEP THREE: Dumping Your NAND (that sounds nasty)
- Unpack or copy the Simple 360 NAND Flasher folder, which you downloaded, to the root of your external USB drive.
- Boot your console into Freestyle 3.
- Use the File Manager utility in FS3 to browse to the Simple 360 NAND Flasher directory, highlight default.xex, then press A to start the program.
- Press X as it says and the utility will quickly dump or copy your NAND to your USB drive. Mine only took 16 seconds.
STEP FOUR: Creating A New NAND Image
- Fire up JRunner.
- [A] Choose the dashboard version you wish to update to where it says Dash Version. This drop-down list is dependent on the Dash Packs you downloaded from the JRunner page.
- [B] Select RGH or JTAG depending on your console.
- [C] Browse for the NAND that Simple 360 NAND Flasher dumped into your USB drive (your drive should be plugged into your PC duh!) It will be called flashdump.bin and located in the Simple 360 NAND Flasher folder.
- [D] Now type in your CPU key in the field provided.
- [E] Select DashLaunch Patches and select Include Launch.ini [E] ,then Launch.ini Options [E]
- You can configure your launch.ini here. Mousing over each item tells you what it does. If you still don't know how these work then just leave the defaults alone.
- [F] Make sure the default points to where Freestyle Dash is located in your system (mine is in a folder called FSD3 on my external HD.
- Close this window when done.
- [G] Go ahead and click on the Create Image button near the top of the main JRunner window.
- [H] JRunner will create your new NAND and the log window will show you where the new NAND has been saved.
- Navigate to that location and copy the file called updflash.bin to the ROOT of your USB drive.
STEP FIVE: Updating Your NAND
- Go back to your XBOX console and like in step three, open up Simple 360NAND Flasher.
- You will be greeted by slightly different screen this time.
- Press A to overwrite your NAND with the one we created in step four. This should only take about 30 seconds.
- The console will then power off (no it's still working, don't worry).
- Boot up your console again and your XBOX 360 Dashboard will now be updated to the latest supported version.
Hooray!!!
Hi bro ...I am stuck at step 3 .....as I am a big noob ...I bought an already jtag xbox 360 from a shop ...but my xbox 360 shows that f3 installer in games demo ..I.e. this freestyleinstaller 3 in on the internal harddisk of my xbox 360 ....I have no idea how to boot it ....please tell me as fast as u can ....thanks
ReplyDeleteSo do you mean that your console currently boots up in the default XBOX dashboard? If so please follow my other tutorial here:
Deletehttp://geekbone.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-to-play-xbox-360-iso-files-from.html
Unfortunately, mu tutorials are designed for my current setup where I run all games and Freestyle 3 from an EXTERNAL drive since I only have a 4GB Arcade version of XBOX 360.
Well my setup is same as urs .....and I have already done it upgrading ....I google it how to boot in f3 ..but still thanks a lot man really appreciate your help
DeleteThank you so so much
OMG ARE YOU A FUCKING RETARDED DONT POST ON THIS FORM MR PC GENIUS YOU CANT OVERCLOCK A FUCKING CPU,
Deletei did everything listed. but after transfering the updflash.bin to the ROOT of your USB drive. and plug back into the 360 it still shows only to press X to dump.. there is not option of A to Flash it.. is there something i have to do for it to read from the usb stick to see there is a nand to update?
ReplyDeleteHmmm that is quite odd. As I mentioned above this was my first and only try at updating my console. It does seem like you followed all steps correctly since you got the point where JRunner created a file called updflash.bin.
DeleteDoes your console recognize and read your USB drive normally? I mean not in Simple 360NAND Flasher but through the regular dashboard or FSD?
Transfer it to the nand folder from where you launch the nand xex file and it will work
ReplyDeletei pressed my eject key but nth happen and i have been playing downloaded game for sometimes. Can you assist me hot to get the cpu key?
ReplyDeleteLOL Fuck dis shit imam gonna build a PC
DeleteSpecs:
Core i7 6 cores 12 threats
10TB SSD
Dear Admin, please make a tutorial on how to get cpu key if for Corona motherboard xbox user since Corona doesn't support Xell..or if u know any other way to get the cpu key..thanks!
ReplyDeleteJust use Dashlaunch. once there, press lb and navigate to system info. It will show you what it is, and it looks so much sexier than Xell!
DeleteIt worked!
ReplyDelete- I didn't have to type in my CPU key
- The DUMPING of my NAND didn't work the tool "Simple 360 NAND Flasher" I used another tool. Doesn't really matter you use I guess as long as it works with your console
- about 'J-runner', at step "A" the dropdownlistbox where you select the DASH version, you first have to download a dashboard upgrade, you can do that from the 'J-runner' page (under the section "Dash Packs"). Once downloaded extract read:MERGE the 2 folders "xeBuild" and "common" within the extracted J-runner folder THEN start J-runner
- About the dash pack: I downloaded the latest version (highest number, top one in the list under the 'Dash Packs' section on the J-runner page).
I used "15574.rar" I didn't know if it was safe to use "J-Runner 16203 Additional Pack.rar" which seems higher but has "...Additional Pack..." in it's name. I didn't know what that meant.
Thanks for this, I didn't do any 360 NAND operations for a long while now so I needed a place to start!
That's great that it worked for ya. I however did already include in step A, the link to download the dash packs :)
DeleteBricked my console. Last step rebooted my console with fan at the highest speed(Blank Screen). Switched it off and on and now console is dead :/ Any advice ?
ReplyDeleteDoes the green ring cycle appear when u power on?
DeleteCan u boot in to xell? Hold eject to power on?
Happened to me too, it happened when i made the image with the dashlaunch options. Remake the image without the dashlaunch options, stick the update.bin on the root of a usb drive, then boot using the eject button. Xell will detect the update and reflash the xbox for you.
Deletebesides injustice, is there any other game that required the latest dashboard?
ReplyDeleteTombrider
Deletethank you man I respect you thank you

DeleteHello Admin,
ReplyDeleteI have exactly the same console as yours.
I have done everything but I'm stuck at final step.
When I copy the newly created image to root of USB and run the nand flasher from FSD File manager, it shows me the same screen as of step 3.
Just 1 option of X Button for dumping the nand, and no other option. Please help ASAP.
Thanks.
Incase anyone is wondering why they cant dump their nand using the linked version of 'Simple 360 NAND Flasher', is because the OP linked to the wrong version, the link point the v1, but OP is using 1.2, You can just search google to find it

Perfect tutorial! :)
How much time it need to update dashboard
ReplyDeleteHey Guys,
ReplyDeleteI am a noobe in need of help. Please.
I have an Xbox Slim trinity, RGH freeboot, MFG. 2010
Had the 2.0.14719.0 kennel dash.
3B7C183B254515D73C9AD6E29891D022 CPU
Purchases Ass. Creed Rogue and could not play.
Updated the kernel dash to 2.0.16747 (which was the newest) on Swizzy Soft 2.093
Used Xell to get CPU key #.
Used Simple 360 nand flasher to dump the nand and flash the new kernel.
I use the xbox 360 dash or I can use FSD3.
I could not figure out to get FSD3 to load at start up rather than the standard xbox dash.
I do not had avitars anymore from the new update.
I have tried downloading the update ($ystemupdate), put it on the root of my USB and inserting into the xbox, rebooting and the xbox does not pick it up. I have tried changing the name (extra $, systemupdate) basicly everything I tried had not worked.
I would like to get the avitars back, change it so that FSD loads on startup and set it up on internet. (FTP)
I can play Ass Creed now, but without the cd in it seems to have glitches and no avitars.
Please help
Thanks
Kristina
I created an updated tutorial to reflect the changes of the latest version of JRunner. DISCLAIMER: PLEASE READ THE INTRO IN THAT TUTORIAL FIRST BEFORE DOING THE UPDATE YOURSELF!!!
